The master's thesis examines the Impact of Cloud Cost Transparency on Organizational
Decision-making. Using semi-structured interviews with department heads and technical
roles, the study aims to clarify whether increased cost transparency leads to improved cost
accountability, ultimately impacting how departments utilize and manage data platform
resources. The results of the interviews reveal a differentiated view of the use of cost
reporting, understanding and subsequent decision-making behavior. In particular, the analysis
shows that the introduction of the cost transparency report has led to observable immediate
decision making, with department heads using the insights gained to make more informed
and proactive decisions regarding the allocation and optimization of cloud resources. In
addition, the study details the perceived benefits resulting from this newfound transparency,
including increased overall cost awareness among stakeholders and a more detailed
understanding of the cost implications associated with various data platform initiatives. By
examining these specific findings, this study underscores the critical role of effective cost
transparency mechanisms not only in optimizing cloud resource utilization, but also in
fostering a culture of accountability and efficiency in organizations managing complex data
environments. This empirical evidence underscores the need for organizations to prioritize
the implementation of robust cost transparency strategies as a key pillar of effective cloud
cost management and strategic decision making in data platform management.
