In a time when urban mobility challenges are increasing in complexity, an efficient use
of data can play a central role in providing cities, policymakers, and citizens with the
knowledge and tools for a more competent urban management strategy. The movement of
people, done through various means, including public or private offerings, generates a
significant amount of data that can be transformed into insights. These can be presented in
the form of trends and patterns of movements or even in the identification of problematic
areas in terms of accidents or lack of public transportation options.
Within this scope, this master thesis project aims to create a business intelligence
solution for the Viseu Dão Lafões region, where the stakeholders of the area can support their
decision-making activities on the information presented in the several dashboards. These
dashboards provide knowledge on the mobility sector of the region, namely of the Taxi
services supplied by the municipalities to the citizens, the road traffic streams, the public
transportation ticket sales, and lastly, the area visitors’ movements and dynamics. The project
is supported by the Microsoft tool Power BI, where all data processing steps, such as the
extraction, transformation, and loading were performed.
Essentially, with the help of data visualization, this project offers a framework for a
better understanding of the mobility data of the Viseu Dão Lafões region and enables its
stakeholders to act and decide on it.
