O periódico satírico O Piolho Viajante foi publicado em 72 folhetos reunidos em quatro volumes, de 1802 a 1804. Teve uma recepção notável, com sucessivas edições e reimpressões até à segunda metade do século XIX. A crítica social foi um contributo decisivo para a formação da opinião pública e um traço distintivo do humor de O Piolho Viajante, editado por António Manuel Policarpo da Silva, livreiro e editor lisboeta. Ao longo das suas viagens, o “Piolho” faz uma sátira ao Portugal do início do século XIX através das carapuças enfiadas na cabeça dos seus alvos, estereótipos sociais representativos da realidade social da época. The satirical periodical O Piolho Viajante (‘The Travelling Louse’) was published in 72 booklets collected in four volumes from 1802 to 1804. It had a remarkable reception, with successive editions and re-impressions into the second half of the nineteenth century. Social criticism was a decisive contribution to public opinion and it was a distinctive feature of the humor of O Piolho Viajante, edited by António Manuel Policarpo da Silva, a Lisbon bookseller and publisher. Throughout its travels, the ‘Louse’ provides a satire of early-nineteenth-century Portugal by means of the carapuças (‘hoods’) shoved into the heads of its targets, social stereotypes representing the social reality of the time.
