Self-medication is a common practice, mainly due to the easy access for medicines and the difficulty, nowadays, in getting appointments at health centers and hospitals. University students are a population more prone to this practice given that some are far from their usual residence. The goal of this study was to investigate university students' perceptions of self-medication using a survey. Various statistical tests were conducted to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and prevalence of self-medication in students' lives. It was possible to observe that there is a high prevalence of self-medication in the sample analyzed, although it is mostly used to treat mild symptoms. The results showed that the area of study was a determining factor in obtaining significant results, since students from the health sector not only have a higher level of knowledge, which means that they rely more on their own knowledge, but also have a higher prevalence of self-medication than students from other areas. Student’s profession was also an important variable, as students had a higher level of self-medication than working students and a higher level of trust in the advice of pharmacists, while students mostly relied on the advice of family and friends. There was also a greater tendency for females to self-medicate, but also greater confidence on the part of females to seek advice from pharmacists and health professionals.
