Resumo(s)
The exponential growth of blockchain technology is commonly associated with bitcoin and
other cryptocurrencies, however, this technology has demonstrated great potential when
applied to other sectors. One of the areas where blockchain presents promising prospects is
healthcare, particularly in the Electronic Health Record management systems functioning. The
security and interoperability features that concern blockchain, put it as a principal candidate
to mitigate some of the current gaps in today's healthcare systems. Given the sensitivity of
healthcare data, it is extremely important to consider not only the compatible points, but also
all the setbacks involved in transitioning to this technology. This is especially potentiated by
the lack of practical implementation in a sector like healthcare, thus emphasizing the
importance of clear evaluation. Through literature research and NGT methodology composed
of two groups of 4 and 6 blockchain specialists, this research has shown that blockchain indeed
possesses a wide array of promising characteristics that could facilitate patients’ ownership of
their medical data. Furthermore, it suggests that blockchain can foster an integrated approach
to exchanging information among different health entities while securely storing records.
However, this study also addresses the challenges associated with this potential application,
revealing that difficulties in standardization and data compatibility protocols, along with the
lack of trust and knowledge in the technology, constitute significant setbacks in the adoption
of blockchain as an immediate candidate for EHR system management. The identified
challenges do not imply that blockchain is unfit to support EHR systems, but rather that critical
variables should be thoroughly studied and evaluated before considering its implementation.
Additionally, blockchain is continuously evolving; therefore, different variations and models
may present distinct enabling factors and challenges.
