Resumo(s)
Rivers have perennially sculpted the earth's landscape, nurturing civilizations and sustaining biodiversity. In Douala, Cameroon, the intricate dance between human progress and the natural flow of the Wouri River presents a critical case study of this dynamic. In this comprehensive study, the impact of land use changes on river channel dynamics in Douala, Cameroon, is meticulously analyzed through the lens of advanced remote sensing data and sophisticated machine learning algorithms. This study embarks on a temporal journey, unraveling the transformation of Douala's landscape over recent decades, from lush vegetation and wetlands to an increasingly urbanized milieu, and its profound implications on the Wouri River's morphology. Employing a blend of Landsat imagery and Google Earth Engine capabilities, the research delineates shifts in land use patterns, emphasizing the encroachment of urban development into critical natural habitats. The findings underscore the urgency of integrating sustainable urban planning with environmental conservation strategies to safeguard riverine ecosystems against the backdrop of explosive urban growth. The thesis articulates a vision for future urban development that is in harmony with the ecological and hydrological integrity of river systems, advocating for policy frameworks that prioritize environmental sustainability alongside economic and demographic expansion. This seminal work contributes significantly to the discourse on sustainable development, offering a blueprint for policymakers, urban planners, and environmental stewards aiming to mitigate the ecological footprint of urbanization while fostering resilient and sustainable urban ecosystems.
