The conceptual design is one of the most important phases in the fulfilment of a new design, wich clarifies the entire structure, mechanisms and components of the product under development. This phase also defines the highest cost, thus increasing it's importance in the completion of the design. Nowadays, there are several methodologies that can be used to complete the conceptual design for mechanical equipments, but none of these can be applied for the entire process. Therefore, it is essential to designate the best methodology for each phase of the conceptual design, in order to obtain a solid and well-structured design. At first, some of the most commonly used methodologies in conceptual design were covered and a comparison is made between them in order to understand and select the best one for each phase. The methodologies covered in this thesis were: Axiomatic Design; Decision Matrix; QFD; AHP; TRIZ; Kano Model and, Brainstorming. Subsequently, two procedures necessary for the design of conceptual design: Simplified Theoretical Models and Mathematical Modelling. The final stage was developed a methodology for the design of mechanical equipment conceptual design. This was used some of the methods studied previously, such as Kano Model, Brainstorming, Axiomatic Design and Decision Matrix. The methodology developed was easy to use and could be applied to the entire conceptual design process, after that differentiating it from all the existing methods covered in this thesis. Also at this stage, a simple example was applied to illustrate and guide the use of this methodology for future mechanical equipment conceptual design.
