Resumo(s)
The perception of the qualifications needed to enter the labor market in Portugal and in other
countries is constantly changing. Nowadays, companies are increasingly looking for a new graduate
with certain soft skills rather than a new graduate with an excellent GPA. On the other hand, more and
more students are participating in extracurricular activities during their degree. This practice is usually
often in the form of leisure and personal interest, but also to acquire certain skills that make them
have a distinctive role as an individual. The purpose of this study is to understand if the practice of
extracurricular activities has any impact on the Portuguese student's academic performance, as well
as to understand if by participating in certain extracurricular activities, students are more likely to
acquire soft skills that the job market is demanding. Two questionnaires (one for students and other
for companies) were developed to obtain the results for this study. By applying certain statistical tests,
it was possible to determine the conclusions for this research. Findings showed that participation in
extracurricular activities not only improves academic performance but also facilitates the acquisition
of soft skills. In addition, it was possible to determine which soft skills are most desired by
recruiters/companies, and which soft skills students acquire the most by participating in
extracurricular activities. Teamwork was the soft skill that appears in first place in both analyses, which
turns out to be an excellent conclusion because it means that students have the requirements that the
labor market are looking for.
