Resumo(s)
Rapid population growth has had numerous consequences for our environment, namely in the air
quality of urban areas. In order to achieve smarter and more sustainable cities, we need to act quickly
to reduce the emission of pollutants into the atmosphere, through daily and real-time control. With
the rise of innovative technologies and new ways of generating real-time data through sensors and
cameras, smart cities began to take shape, using new ways of managing their resources, assets, and
services more efficiently. New studies began to emerge in the Business Intelligence field in which the
behavior of citizens was analyzed, helping cities in their short-term decision-making. However, these
studies sometimes do not include important variables that could influence air quality, such as traffic,
industrial production, and meteorological data, and fail to tackle the challenges related to big data
generated by sensors. This study seeks to implement a Business Intelligence solution that allows the
measurement of air quality of Lisbon in real-time, through data generated by sensors, relating it to the
behavior of communities and other environmental metrics. This solution aims to rank the areas of
Lisbon according to the air quality, understand if air pollution is influenced by traffic and weather, and
create an alert system that informs the relevant authorities whenever a given environmental metric
exceeds healthy levels. The development of this solution was achieved in Microsoft Power BI, where
several dashboards were constructed to analyze real-time data, uncover hidden patterns in
historical data, and visualize the correlation between air quality, traffic, and meteorological variables.
This study demonstrated the importance of using Business Intelligence in the integration, processing,
and analysis of large amounts of sensor data, i.e. big data. Thanks to the Power BI dashboards created,
it was possible to determine which areas of Lisbon displayed the highest level of pollutants, an
information which is useful to authorities, who can use it to better prevent and tackle unhealthy levels
of air pollution. This solution can be extended beyond Lisbon and adapted for application in other cities
within Portugal or even globally
