The global or local design of language teaching materials for general and specific purposes is a challenging task that implies several procedures. One of the procedures is the establishment of principles derived from research findings in second language acquisition, in learning and teaching language materials development and in intercultural communication applied to specific domains. The application of these principles to practice requires methodological decisions that not only match research but also recognize the target students as social agents who need to be able to perform communicative tasks in an effective way. In the current educational paradigm, instead of replicating convenient but ineffective pedagogical approaches, material writers should contribute to innovation. The aim of this dissertation is the development of task-based language materials for workplace Portuguese focused on the business area. The materials will cover B1 level introduced in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment (2001) and updated in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment – Companion Volume (2020).
