This dissertation is the result of the ethnographic research developed between July/2019 and October/2020, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in the scope of the artistic workshop Pimp My Drag, in which a group of drag queen performers sought to develop their personas, improve their make-up and costume skills and stimulate their own creativity in performances. Allying a strategy of participant observation and interviews, information about the doing-drag was collected, it means information about the drag queen performative activity in the observed context to notice which subjective and objective elements motivated the performers to dedicate time and resources in enhancing that cultural practice. In this sense, we sought to unveil the intrinsic aspects of the performative practice itself stitching them up with the performers’ subjectivity and their life experiences as part of the LGBTQIA+ minority. Through the analysis of the gender performativity theory, based on the knowledge brought by the performance studies and by anthropology, we discuss the role of the drag queens in the artistic and social cultural context of the city.
