The amount of data collected by transactional systems proves to be a challenge to be interpreted by managers in any modern company. Business Intelligence tools solve that problem by bringing concise information on different levels of granularity, making it possible for decision makers to act based on empirical evidence.
This report is the result of the work performed by the author when working full-time developing a complete Business Intelligence solution to Delta, a leader in the heavy equipment industry.
Delta reaches customers through a global network of dealers. One of the services offered to dealers is a software to manage rental equipment, called DDRS. It acts as an easy-to-use rental management system and e-commerce. However, the solution had its shortcomings: DDRS was built as a tool to record and manage transactions and orders, with no Business Intelligence capabilities. At some point, Dealers were demanding such capabilities, and Delta decided to outsource the development of a solution.
Using the Design Science Research Methodology, the work was performed between November/2021 and March/2022. The solution was designed with Snowflake acting as Data Warehouse and Microsoft Power BI to build and visualize dashboards.
Daily meetings allowed the author to report changes that were carried out on the previous day, and the client presented comments or requests for change. Thus, the data warehouse and the dashboards were built iteratively.
This report covered the entire process of development of an artifact/technical solution that was necessary from a business requirement. The final product was well-received by the client, and the objectives proposed were met.
