Os séculos finais da Idade Média conhecem, um pouco por todo o Ocidente, o irromper de novas formas de vida religiosa feminina. Entre estas, contam-se também fenómenos mais marginais e institucionalmente menos enquadrados, mas igualmente protagonizados por mulheres, como foram o emparedamento ou reclusão voluntária ou os mais tardios beatérios ou grupos de mulheres pobres. O seu rastro é muitas vezes difícil de encontrar, a documentação escassa e muito lacunar. Os rostos e percursos destas “mulheres religiosas” teimam em esconder-se. O que nos é possível saber sobre elas, da sua relação com os núcleos urbanos onde se instalam e com os diversos poderes leigos e eclesiásticos, dos seus quotidianos, dos espaços que habitam e do modo como os habitam? A estas e outras perguntas procuraremos dar alguma resposta, sobretudo a partir dos casos mais abundantes e documentalmente mais significativos que encontrámos para as vilas e cidades do sul do país. Pois talvez pela própria influência do eremitismo que floresceu vigorosamente nos termos dos concelhos do AlémTejo, é também e sobretudo nesta geografia que mais cedo as urbes incluem alguns destes grupos de mulheres que encontram, afinal, no religioso um espaço novo de afirmação e autonomia. The final centuries of the Middle Ages witnessed the emergence of new forms of female religious life. Among these, there are also more marginal and less institutionally framed phenomena, but equally led by women, such as the voluntary reclusion or the later beaterios or groups of poor women. Their trail is often hard to find, and documentation is scarce and very lacunar. The faces and the paths of these “religious women” stubbornly hide. What can we know about them, about their relationship with the urban centres where they settle and with the lay and ecclesiastical powers, about their daily lives, the spaces they inhabit and the way they live in them? To these and other questions we shall try to give some answers, above all on the basis of the most abundant and documentally significant cases we have found for the towns and cities of the south of the Portuguese realm. Perhaps due to the influence of eremitism itself, which flourished vigorously in the municipalities of Além-Tejo, it is also and above all in this geography that some of these groups of women flourished and found, after all, a new space of affirmation and autonomy in religious life.
