José de Guimarães is one of the most highly regarded artists in Portugal. With a long and multifaceted career in the arts that runs through several decades of activity, is frequently praised for his search a cultural “osmosis” in his creations. Less known as a collector, his eclectic and vast collection of art, comprises works from the Sub-Saharan, Chinese and South American (pre-Colombian era) contexts, including 38 sub-Saharan masks, in permanent exhibition since 2012, in the “Room 3” of the José de Guimarães International Centre for the Arts (CIAJG). Proposing a dialogue between its permanent collections and Guimarães’ artworks, as well as with invited contemporary artists, the CIAJG is a space of experimental and curatorial approaches. Establishing a genealogy of the artist and the center, with the focus on the masks’ room, I explore the circulation and reception of exogenous objects in a European center of contemporary art, shedding a light on some of the debates in the field of museology and exhibitions.
