As relações de género, intergeracionais e familiares, reais ou imagi nadas, referenciadas a populações imigrantes têm vindo a configurar um foco privilegiado de reflexão e de intervenção política em vários países europeus. Em paralelo, um corpus já muito significativo de pesquisas revela que a própria migração introduz instabilidade nas relações familiares dos migrantes, interpelando-os a refletirem e a produzirem variantes ao nível das práticas, dos valores e dos significados das suas vivências familiares. Tendo como contraponto alguns dos debates norte europeus em torno dos modos “certos” e “errados” de viver em família no seio de sociedades multiculturais, tentaremos mostrar como a arena de relações interétnicas em Portugal é substancialmente diversa, em particular no que respeita ao escasso recurso ou à pouca importância dada a debates públicos orientados para a promoção de formas de “imperialismo ético” que vão contra políticas relacionais de tolerância à diversidade. Relations between genders and generations and within real or imagined families, in the case of immigrant populations, have been a privileged focus of reflection and political intervention in several European countries. A considerable corpus of research has meanwhile shown that migration itself introduces instability in the family relations of migrants, prompting them to reflect and produce variations at the level of practices, values, and meanings of their family experiences. Using as a counterpoint a number of Nothern European arguments about “right” or “wrong” ways of living one’s family in a multicultural society, we will attempt to show how the arena of inter-ethnic relations in Portugal is significantly different. This is particularly clear in the scant resort to or little weight attributed to public debate geared towards the promotion of forms of “ethical imperialism” that go against relational policies inspired by tolerance of diversity.
