No estuário do Tejo, o núcleo urbano do Seixal conheceu um período de desenvolvimento económico e demográfico durante o século XIX, coincidindo com importantes modificações estruturais de amplitude nacional, nomeadamente as transformações jurídicas da propriedade iniciadas com a venda em hasta pública dos bens das ordens monásticas. Este processo teve um impacto significativo nos salgados existentes no Seixal, até então pertencentes na sua maioria a mosteiros lisboetas, originando a sua exploração através da introdução de novas actividades económicas por uma elite local em ascensão. A orizicultura, a ostreicultura e a piscicultura constituíram investimentos das elites seixalenses neste período, procurando tirar partido, quer das condições existentes e dos recursos naturais disponíveis nesse território ribeirinho, quer do novo enquadramento administrativo e legal resultante da consolidação do Liberalismo. O processo de transformação dos salgados do Seixal no século XIX constitui, assim, um fenómeno representativo das interações entre ambiente e processos sociais e económicos vivenciados num núcleo urbano de pequena dimensão. Focusing in the urban settlement of Seixal, located in the Tagus estuary, during the 19th century, is possible to verify its economic and demographic evolution, which has correspondence with important structural transformations that occurred at national level, namely the public auctions of the property of the religious monastic orders. This process had a huge impact in the wetlands of Seixal municipality, which untill then belonged in their majority to Lisbon monasteries, making possible the introduction of new forms of exploitation of this resource by the local rising elite. Rice farming, oyster farming and fish breeding were important investments by Seixal leading members during this period, benefiting both from the natural resources available and the new legal framework introduced by liberal governments. Therefore, the transformation process of the Seixal wetlands during the 19th century sheds a light on the interaction between the environment and the social and economic evolution that took place in a small urban settlement.
