Resumo(s)

This article focuses on the role played by Fernando José Salgueiro Maia (1944-1992) as editor of the newspaper Os Progressistas, a newspaper of the military unit he commanded in what was then Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau) during the Portuguese colonial war in Africa. The source of the article is the aforementioned newspaper, kept in the Army Library in Lisbon, and which had not been the subject of academic research to date. The time frame is the period in which the newspaper was published, 1971-1973. The scope of the discussion is the place of humor in Os Progressistas, targeting the military hierarchy and the Portuguese dictatorship then in force. This newspaper published by a military unit during the colonial war gives testimony of the evolution of Captain Salgueiro Maia's thought, helping to understand and contextualize the action he led on April 25, 1974, with his decisive role in the Carnation Revolution.
