Shake-speares Tenth Muse: The Will to Nothing

| dc.description.abstract | Shakespeare’s invocation of the “Tenth Muse” in Sonnet 38 is the symbolic fulfillment of his will to nothing aesthetic philosophy, in which the perpetual conjunction of the number one (alternately viewed as will) and zero (or more properly nothing or none), reveals the poet’s aesthetic-erotic generative principle in the Sonnets, aimed at overcoming the otherwise merciless hand of time. This same will or one in connection to nothing or none is also alluded to by the poet’s playful use of the words “won”, “win” and “own”, curiously leading to the idea that in order to achieve immortality, the poet must own up to the moment at hand, which is to say, to the impossible “now” at the heart of nothing. Throughout Shakespeare’s plays and poems and especially in his Sonnets, the philosophical problem of the one and the many, previously discussed by philosophers and theologians in the context of Being or God, takes on a new aesthetic dimension, grounding and merging the poet’s will to overcome time with timeless nothing, authorial blackness and existential nowhere, transforming negative theology into negative capability, by linking the will to nothing with the will to multiplicity. My project encompasses a ten-tiered approach to Shakespeare’s poetic philosophy, revealing how the driving force behind the making of immortal poetry is a kind of self-love as nothing that opens the door to the other, and ultimately, to the reader. Shake-speares Sonnets (1609) are about overcoming time through poetry and love; in short, they are a collaborative project carried out by the author and his readers with the intent to save humanity from the narcissistic dungeon of fruitless self-love. Beyond that, they are the expression of a complex poetic philosophy of some importance to their author and his readers, evidenced by his earliest narrative poems and plays, extending all the way down to his most mature dramatic masterpieces. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | A invocação de Shakespeare à “Décima Musa” no Soneto 38 é o cumprimento simbólico do seu desejo de alcançar a filosofia estética do nada, na qual a conjugação contínua do número um (visto alternadamente como vontade/desejo) e zero (ou, mais apropriadamente, nada ou nenhum), revela o princípio gerador estético-erótico do poeta nos Sonetos, destinado a ultrapassar o impiedoso relógio do tempo. Esta/e mesma/o vontade/desejo (will) ou um (one), ligada(o) a nada (nothing) ou nenhum (none), é também o que fica implícito no uso lúdico pelo poeta das palavras “ganhou”, “ganhar” e “próprio” (em inglês “won”, “win” e “own”, foneticamente próximas das palavras “will”, “one” ou “none”), levando curiosamente à ideia de que para ganhar a imortalidade, o poeta precisa de conquistar o momento presente, ou seja, o “agora” impossível no centro do nada. Nos poemas e peças de Shakespeare (e sobretudo nos seus Sonetos), o problema filosófico do um e de muitos, previamente discutido por filósofos e teólogos no contexto do Ser ou de Deus, adquire uma nova dimensão estética, fundamentando e fundindo a/o vontade/desejo do poeta de ultrapassar o tempo com o nada intemporal, a escuridão autoral e o não-lugar existencial, transformando a teologia negativa em capacidade negativa ao ligar a/o vontade/desejo do nada à/ao vontade/desejo da multiplicidade. Este projecto apresenta uma abordagem em dez níveis da filosofia poética de Shakespeare, revelando como a força motora por detrás da criação da poesia imortal (em Shakes-peares Sonnets, 1609) é uma forma de amor-próprio como o nada que abre a porta ao outro e, em última análise, ao leitor. As dez palavras-chave que movem este projecto são o Amor do Um pelos Muitos e dos Muitos pelo Um, as Amorosas Partes do Amor, o Negro e o Belo, a Auto-reflexão das Mãos do Poeta, a Décima Musa, a/o Vontade/ Desejo do Nada, o Não-lugar, Sr. Duplo-tu Duplo-eu e o Belo e o Horrível. Shake-speare’s Sonnets versam sobre a derrota do Tempo através da poesia e do amor; em suma, trata-se de um projecto colaborativo levado a cabo pelo autor e os seus leitores, com o intuito de salvar a humanidade do calabouço narcisista do amor-próprio infrutífero. Para além disso, são também a expressão de uma filosofia poética complexa de alguma importância para o seu autor e leitores, presente logo nos seus primeiros poemas narrativos e peças e estendendo-se até às suas obras-primas dramáticas mais maduras. | pt_PT |
