Teacher Salaries in Portugal: A Data-Driven Analysis of Macroeconomic Alignment

Remuneration is widely acknowledged as a key factor influencing the attractiveness, sustainability, and long-term stability of the teaching profession. However, existing research often examines teacher salaries primarily from organizational and policy perspectives, while their relationship with broader macroeconomic dynamics remains relatively underexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining whether the statutory salaries of teachers and school heads in Portugal evolved in alignment with key macroeconomic indicators between 2021 and 2024. The analysis integrates salary data with indicators reflecting economic performance, labor market dynamics, and cost-of-living pressures, including inflation, GDP per capita, national average wages, and housing prices. Methodologically, the research follows a Design Science Research approach and develops a Business Intelligence dashboard as an analytical artifact that enables the integration, visualization, and exploration of heterogeneous datasets within a unified analytical environment. The findings indicate that although statutory salaries increased in nominal terms across all teaching career stages, these adjustments were insufficient to offset inflation and rising living costs, resulting in a decline in real purchasing power. In addition, salary growth remained below the broader labor market's national average wage growth, contributing to a deterioration in the profession’s relative economic position. By integrating educational remuneration data with macroeconomic indicators through a Business Intelligence framework, this study proposes a replicable analytical approach that supports more transparent and evidence-based policy analysis in education systems.
