Andava sempre a cavalo, atendendo
Even today, there are still some elderly people living in Timor who remember Dr António da Costa Carvalho. They say he was tall and robust. He was always on horseback, responding promptly whenever he was called. A man of good character and a friend of Governor Cipriano Forjaz, ( 1) he would sometimes argue with him over differing political views. He was the saviour of the poor, told us, moved, a Timorese man who had sought his medical care. He made the grand mission of a true doctor his life’s work. Whenever he appeared at a patient’s bedside, the hope of recovery was reborn with him. For this reason, it can truly be said of Dr António da Costa Carvalho that he enjoyed widespread friendships. According to the Master Register of the Health Service of the Province of Macau and • Timor from 1857 to 1926, held in the Overseas Historical Archive, Dr António da Costa Carvalho, son of Luís da Costa Carvalho, was born in Barras, parish and municipality of Tábua, district of Coimbra, on 12 October 1862. On 14 November 1884, he was deemed fit for service by the Naval Health Board. On the 25th of the same month, an order appointed him a cadet medical officer for the Overseas Territories. And, on the 19th of the following month, he enlisted in the Navy’s Seamen’s Corps, with the number 110.
