The impact of Cultural Events in Airbnb Supply and Reviews: Evidence from Porto and Lisbon Using the Generalized Synthetic Control Method

| dc.description.abstract | This study investigates the causal impact of major cultural events on the dynamics of Airbnb listings in the Portuguese cities of Lisbon and Porto. Drawing on data from Inside Airbnb and applying the Generalized Synthetic Control (GSC) method, the analysis focuses on two key outcomes: the daily supply of available listings and the sentiment expressed in guest reviews. The research considers six multi-day events in 2024, including music festivals and large-scale concerts, and defines treated neighbourhoods using a 2 km spatial buffer and listing density criteria. Results reveal a statistically significant reduction in the number of available listings during event periods, suggesting increased booking activity in response to demand shocks. In contrast, no significant change was detected in average review sentiment, possibly reflecting measurement limitations or genuine stability in guest satisfaction. This dissertation contributes to the growing body of research on peer-to-peer accommodation and urban tourism, demonstrating the value of causal inference methods in measuring the effects of temporary shocks. It also points out the need for improved data granularity to better understand how platforms like Airbnb interact with evolving patterns of urban tourism. | pt_PT |
