Na terapĂȘutica de qualquer helmintĂase intestinal tem-se procurado a utilização dum agente capaz de matar ou pelo menos intoxicar fortemente os helmintas dum modo rĂĄpido, nĂŁo susceptĂvel de condicionar a aparição dum perĂodo apreciĂĄvel de excitação dos mesmos, capaz de os fazer migrar para o apĂȘndice ou vias biliares. AlĂ©m disso, procura-se que o agente nĂŁo seja tĂłxico nem irritante para o doente nem tĂŁo-pouco dispendioso ou de difĂcil ou morosa administração.
Posto ainda nĂŁo dispormos no arsenal terapĂȘutico da ascarĂase dum produto que satisfaça cabalmente a todos estes quesitos, que acabamos de enunciar, propusemo-nos efectuar um ensaio terapĂȘutico com um produto Ă base de fermento de Carica, papaia, fermento este considerado por Hannak como tendo uma acção proteolĂtica sobre a cutĂcula dos nemĂĄtodos.
In the treatment of any intestinal helminthiasis, the aim has been to use an agent capable of killing or at least severely poisoning the helminths rapidly, without causing a significant period of agitation that might lead them to migrate to the appendix or the bile ducts. Furthermore, the agent should not be toxic or irritating to the patient, nor should it be expensive or difficult or time-consuming to administer. Although we do not yet have a product in the therapeutic arsenal for ascariasis that fully meets all these requirements, which we have just outlined, we have set out to conduct a therapeutic trial with a product based on Carica papaya enzyme, an enzyme considered by Hannak to have a proteolytic action on the cuticle of nematodes.
