In a context of rapidly increasing globalization, it is important to reflect on the implications of our actions. Thus, at the beginning of this century, there were already studies addressing scenarios of the impact of a possible pandemic in Portugal. Worldwide, the pace of economic growth has become more unequal, boosting innovation and differentiation. The country has been marked by periods of recession and economic losses since 2020, reflected in a sharp deterioration of the services and trade balance deficit. This dissertation explores, based on the literature, the impact of pandemics (H1N1 and Covid-19) on economic growth and employment in Portugal, in particular with regard to identifying vulnerabilities and inequalities in the labor market and the effects of lockdown. The results show stability in business output over time, highlighting an overall deceleration in growth, as well as evidence vulnerability in financial terms. The period under analysis, 2008-2019, reveals that the two pandemics caused widespread disruptions in economic activity, with Covid-19 forcing a rethink of habits and opportunities to act and think.
