Maintaining a stable standing position and body orientation are fundamental tasks to perform everyday activities and ensure the quality of life. The ability to control these conditions can be damaged by various conditions, for example rheumatologic diseases, muscular diseases, aging, vestibular diseases and others. For that reason is important to know how the postural control reacts to different situation and how is affected by different anomalies like those that were mention before. The main goal of this project is to define the normal population pattern of up-right standing position using posturography and electromyography (EMG). A protocol was developed for achieve this goal and 39 healthy subjects participated in the study. An extra 10 subject diagnosticated with anquilosant spondylitis took part in the study. Results obtained on this study were very interesting. It was concluded that right Rectus Abdominis played an important role in maintaining the upright standing posi-tion, by its constantly activation along the conditions of the protocol. Analyzing center of pressure (COP) and EMG parameters, it was concluded that visual feedback has an important role in maintaining the postural control. By analyzing the 10 extra subjects, it was concluded that EMG is an essential tool in order to compare the two groups and identify differences.pt_PT
