The present study and internship involved a participation in the multidisciplinary team of the "Sistema de Monitorização da Ocupação do Solo" (SMOS) of the "Direção-Geral do Território" (DGT), responsible for the creation and development of the new model of the "Carta de Uso e Ocupação do Solo" (COS) for Portugal. During the internship, automatic and semi-automatic tools were used to identify areas smaller than 1 ha (new Minimum Cartographic Unit of COS) and larger than 1 ha (possible errors), with a different COS classification in than cartographic products launched under the Copernicus program, through its Earth Monitoring Service. The products analyzed were the High-Resolution Layers (HRL): Imperviousness Density, Tree Cover Density and Water & Wetness and the local products, Urban Atlas and Natura 2000. For each product analyzed, workflows were created to carry out the various geoprocessing tasks in the two selected pilot areas, Minho and Trás-os-Montes. After processing the models, the results were photointerpreted to analyze the results obtained. The results prove the importance of the proposed methodological approach, because thousands of alerts and hectares were identified which can bring substantial improvements in the new version of COS.
