ABSTRACT - Introduction: Patient satisfaction is an important tool in assessing the quality of the health system. The Consumer Assessment of Health Providers and Systems (CAHPS) Hospital Survey was developed in 2006 as a standardized instrument to evaluate the experiences and satisfaction of patients in the United States of America, being later adapted and validated for other contexts, such as the European and Asian. With this work, we intend to develop a reliable and valid measuring instrument, the HCAPHS, which allows the assessment of the patient's experiences and satisfaction in a Portuguese hospital. Objectives: The main objective of this work is to develop the cultural adaptation and validation of the HCAHPS satisfaction questionnaire for the European Portuguese patient, aiming the study of its psychometric properties and evaluating the satisfaction and experience of users regarding the health care provided in the hospital. Methods: The Portuguese version of the HCAHPS was tested using expert consultation and a pilot test. A quantitative cross-sectional study was carried out involving a sample of 199 patients to analyze its reliability and internal consistency. Results: The evaluation of the Portuguese version of the HCAHPS revealed a Cronbach's alpha of 0.78, showing reasonable reliability and internal consistency in the 9 dimensions analyzed, with a range from 0.45 to 0.79. The two dimensions analysis does not reach the acceptable criteria. Relatively to the inter-item correlation, it was demonstrated that the items were within acceptable values of internal consistency. Conclusion: The Portuguese HCAHPS has acceptable psychometric properties to assess user satisfaction and experience regarding hospital care.
