Carter (2019 2025).
M etodos: Estudo observacional, quantitativo, que faz a an alise demogr a ca, usando dados
& McWhinnie [25] considerando as idades limites 1 e 75 anos.
A principal causa
Backgorund: This study aims to describe the distribution of mortality rates by causes of death, sex, age group and by islands in Cape Verde from 1995 to 2018. Determine the potential years of life lost and to forecast the rates of mortality by the Lee-Carter model (2019 - 2025). Methods: Is an observational, quantitative study that performs demographic analysis using mortality data from the Ministry of Health of Cape Verde. The burden of disease was carried out through the annual percentage distribution, and the potential years of life lost acalculated according to Romeder & McWhinnie [25] considering the age 1 and 75 as limits. The standardized mortality rates by causes were calculated considering the capeverdian population in 2010 as the reference, and in order to compare the mortality rates between islands it was calculated the standardized rate for all causes on each island. Results: During the whole period under analysis, the number of deaths in men was always higher than in women. The main cause of death was diseases of the circulatory system, with higher incidence in women and showed the highest rates among the analyzed causes. Islands of S~ao Nicolau, Brava and Santo Ant~ao have the highest mortality rates and are above the national level (2010-2018). The main cause of premature death in women is diseases of the circulatory system, while in men it is the injuries, traumas and consequences of external causes. Conclusion: There was 72% decrease in the mortality rate due to unclassi ed clinical symptoms, and an increase in respiratory tract diseases and tumors. With the exception of circulatory system disease, the mortality rates in men is higher than women in all causes considered. It is expected a decrease in the speci c mortality rates by age group for both sexes, with greater gains in men specially at the lower age groups.
