Com o fim de desenvolver e estimular os trabalhos de investigação médica nas Províncias Ultramarinas, criou o Governo, dois Institutos de Investigação Médica, um em Angola e outro em Moçambique, com sede respectivamente nas cidades de Luanda e de Lourenço Marques.
O Instituto de Investigação Médica de Moçambique (I.I.M.M.) criado à pouco tempo, como o seu congénere de Angola, funciona sob a orientação do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de Lisboa, em estreita colaboração com os Serviços de Saúde das respectivas·Províncias, e depende do Ministério do Ultramar por intermédio dos Governos Gerais e da Direcção Geral do Ensino.
O I.I.M.M. teve como núcleo inicial a Estação Anti-Malárica de Lourenço Marques (E.A.M.), que já vinha realizando uma obra interessante no campo da investigação da Malária e da Bilharziose, aproveitando-se assim o pequeno núcleo de trabalhadores, que formavam esta instituição para iniciar logo a sua actividade, que progressivamente está sendo não só melhorada mas também alargada a outros pontos da ciência médica.
With a view to developing and promoting medical research in the Overseas Provinces, the Government established two Medical Research Institutes, one in Angola and the other in Mozambique, based in the cities of Luanda and Lourenço Marques respectively. The Mozambique Institute of Medical Research (I.I.M.M.), established recently, like its counterpart in Angola, operates under the guidance of the Lisbon Institute of Tropical Medicine, in close collaboration with the Health Services of the respective Provinces, and reports to the Ministry of Overseas Territories via the General Governments and the Directorate-General for Education. The I.I.M.M. had as its initial nucleus the Lourenço Marques Anti-Malaria Station (E.A.M.), which had already been carrying out interesting work in the field of malaria and schistosomiasis research; thus, the small group of staff who made up this institution was utilised to commence its activities immediately, which are progressively being not only improved but also extended to other areas of medical science.
