The pressing goals set by the European Union, climate change, increased consumer
environmental awareness, and demand for eco-friendly services/products are putting
considerable stress on the energy sector to change from fossil fuels to renewable energies.
Nevertheless, this is impossible and impractical in light of the current demand for energy, and
we are thus obliged to find a solution in which we reduce our energy consumption or use
energy in a more sustainable way, or both. Smart home technologies enable governments,
companies, and individuals to achieve their goals, gain direct and indirect benefits regarding
energy savings, and consume resources more conscientiously. This study investigates the
variables that may affect individuals’ adoption of this type of technologies. We apply the
unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model to create our research
model and add three new variables: perceived risks, perceived environmental benefits, and
digital literacy. We conducted a survey, obtaining 171 responses and analysed the data with
the partial least squares method (PLS), allowing us to verify the validity of our model. The
findings show that the perceived risks, perceived environmental benefits, and digital literacy
indeed have an impact on the adoption of smart home technologies. Additionally,
performance expectancy and social influence were confirmed to also have an impact on the
adoption.
