In the era of a technologically immersed workforce, gamification has emerged as a compelling strategy employed by organizations to enhance employee engagement and motivation. This study conducts a systematic literature review to unravel the intricate relationship between employees' perceptions of gamified enterprise systems and their intrinsic motivation at work. It sheds light on the critical aspects of enjoyment, recognition, informativeness, and control within the workplace gamification landscape. After analyzing 18 selected studies from 2016 to 2023, the review finds that when employees perceive gamification as enjoyable and recognizing of their contributions, their intrinsic motivation is positively affected. Furthermore, the greater the gamification systems are seen as valuable tools for skill acquisition and personal development, the higher the likelihood that they will contribute to higher intrinsic motivation. On the contrary, gamification strategies emphasizing control or external regulation tend to be detrimental for intrinsic motivation. Based on these findings, the study suggests four key propositions, which can serve as a foundation for future empirical research. Moreover, these propositions offer valuable insights for organizations seeking to optimize existing gamification strategies or design new ones to increase employee engagement, job satisfaction, and overall performance in the workplace. The work finishes with a discussion of the main findings and conclusions for the literature as well as managerial practices.pt_PT
