This thesis proposes a novelistic reading of João Guimarães Rosa's work. How might this proposal be justified? By claiming work and authorship are fabulous creations and that there is therefore interest in studying the transactions of creation, its adventures and unfoldings? By noting these are correlative notions, in the sense that there is no authorship without work and no work without authorship? By emphasizing the universality according to which authorship and work transcend the sum of their constituent parts? Why read a novel in the work of João Guimarães Rosa? Because the example provides a solid path to abstraction, because Rosa's work is particularly exemplary in its universal vocation, and above all because the idea of work permeates its artifacts, showing that books are organized, with the story they tell and the idea of literature they convey, according to an overarching project that anticipates the whole itself and renders authorship into mythography. How to read a novel in the work of João Guimarães Rosa? By seeking in paradox a guiding thread for the study of its construction and an instrument of reading, one obtains a peculiar kind of nonsense, an operative notion that combines reflexivity and irony as literary marks of antinomy. The trajectory of authorship will be analyzed through the paradox in which life and work are simultaneously merged and split into two biographies, one temporal and the other literary. The reconstitution of the literary biography, structured around a metanoia, raises the problem of signature. We will see how the authorial seal carries a certain idea of legitimacy — one that, in its aim to construct an organic work, so alive as to ensure its own transmission, entails the deliberation of a canon.
