| dc.description.abstract | The making of history of technology is always a challenge but making a history of wireless communications is a goal that is ambitious, given the breadth and depth of such systems, the overlapping generations of the technology, and the complex regulatory environment. One way to reduce the difficulties presented by this objective is to think in terms of emergence, growth, and impact of wireless generations research in order to identify and establish robust (bibliometric) stylized facts in terms of disciplinary distribution, international performance, and real-time dynamics from 1G to 6G. This dissertation presents a systematic outline of the development of 1G-6G related research until 2022 as revealed by over 49305 science and technology publications, wherein the emphasis on 5G-related articles constitutes 68.70% of the data. Findings reveal the progressive growth of research over the years, with 5G and 6G displaying intriguing early-stage development patterns and advancing at a faster rate compared to their predecessors. Moreover, the evolution of these generations has brought about a notably diverse range of contributors over time. One particularly fascinating discovery highlights a resilient and robust partnership that has endured from the era of 2G through the initial stages of 6G research. Despite significant differences in policy regulations, China and the US share a strong bond in knowledge production. This underscores how the interest in wireless technologies can foster diplomatic ties between nations and potentially mitigate tensions, demonstrating areas of cooperation among broader geopolitical differences. Furthermore, themes such as security, infrastructure, sharing, and sustainability have emerged as prevailing topics, significantly influencing the agenda within the telecommunications industry. These aspects have been instrumental in disrupting and shaping the industry's direction and focus. | pt_PT |
