This study explores the spatial distribution and adoption patterns of electric vehicles (EVs) and related charging infrastructure across Portugal. By analysing national-level data and focusing on the capital city of Lisboa, the research investigates the factors influencing the uneven deployment of EV infrastructure and adoption rates, with particular attention to regional disparities and intra-municipal variations. The analysis reveals that urban areas, particularly Lisboa and Porto, experience higher concentrations of both EV infrastructure and adoption, driven by higher population density, economic activity, and better access to public policies and monetary benefits promoting sustainable mobility. However, significant disparities exist, especially in rural regions, where infrastructure levels are lower, indicating barriers to adoption such as reduced demand and limited investment. The study highlights the role of socioeconomic factors, such as income levels and energy consumption, and more recent urban planning decisions, exemplified by the case of Parque das Nações, in shaping the deployment of EV infrastructure. Ultimately, the findings underscore the need for more targeted policies that address these regional and socio-economic disparities to ensure an equitable transition to electric mobility across the country.
