Resumo(s)

With this article, we aim to introduce the Spanish research community and the general public to a particular and little-known case of the exodus caused by the advance of rebel troops in the early autumn of 1936: the refugee camps for Spanish Republicans in Barrancos (Beja, Portugal). To this end, we outline the basic lines of work developed in the first phase of the interdisciplinary HELP project, promoted by the Institute of Contemporary History of the NOVA University of Lisbon. The Herdade da Coitadinha and Herdade das Russianas camps present a triple challenge today: archaeological, methodological, and heritage. In this context, we will show how anthropological work and the recovery of memory are key to beginning to fill an apparent archaeological void. Finally, we address the problem of this absent landscape as a site of memory.
