ABSTRACT - Health literacy (HL) establish a key element to set effective steps to health promotion and quality of life. Therefore an increase of interest by academic and political stakeholders is today evident. The current research, in an articulation with the Programa Nacional de Saúde Escolar da Direção-Geral de Saúde, contributes to the diagnose of Portuguese adolescents’ health literacy and its connection with nutrition issues. Using a CAWI methodology, 783 students (with ages between 12 and 21 years) attending schools in Vila Franca de Xira and Setúbal, during the 2015/2016 school year, answered the survey. The data analysis enables us to conclude that in this sample, 61,6% have high levels of LS (excellent and sufficient). Regarding eating habits 26% eat two servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits, 34,7% stated that they have four daily meals and 15,2% drink more than 1,5 liters of water a day. Normal BMI (body mass index) was found in 68,8% of the participants. HL is associated with the number of meals and the ingestion of water. The consumption of vegetables and fruits and water intake are associated with the BMI. Further research is needed to deepen HL role in health promotion strategies,
