Fazendo parte do espólio documental de Robert C. Smith, em depósito na Biblioteca de Arte e Arquivos da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, encontra--se um texto inédito deste historiador de arte, intitulado “Royal Buildings in Angola”, datado de c. 1948. Consta de 18 páginas datilografadas e versa essencialmente sobre o Palácio dos Governadores de Angola, em Luanda, apoiado sobretudo em duas fontes iconográficas inéditas sobre o edifício: uma planta pertencente à Biblioteca Nacional do Rio de Janeiro (BNRJ) e uma vista da praça dos governadores à guarda do Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (AHU), em Lisboa. Inserir este texto na produção mais vasta de Robert Smith sobre cartografia e iconografia arquitetónica dos séculos XVII e XVIII, especial mente naquela referente ao Brasil, é um dos objetivos deste trabalho, outro, o principal, será enquadrar, analisar e publicar em anexo, o texto em causa. Dar-se-á, assim, a conhecer, mais de 60 anos depois da sua redação, uma investigação minuciosa e bem alicerçada nas suas fontes, fazendo cumprir o seu desígnio inicial, a divulgação de fontes desconhecidas e relevantes para a história de um monumento que, não obstante as contínuas reconstruções, desde o século XVI se encontra no mesmo local para onde foi projetado. Among Robert C. Smith’s collection of documents on deposit at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Art Library and Archives is an unpublished text by this art historian, titled “Royal Buildings in Angola”, dated c. 1948. It consists of 18 typewritten pages and is essentially about the Palace of the Governors of Angola, in Luanda, based mainly on two unpublished iconographic sources about the building, a plan belonging to the Biblioteca Nacional do Rio de Janeiro (BNRJ) and a view of the governors’ square kept by the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (AHU), in Lisbon. Inserting this text into Robert Smith’s wider production on cartography and architectural iconography of the 17th and 18th centuries, especially that relating to Brazil, is one of the aims of this work, and the other, the main one, will be to frame, analyse and publish the text in question in an appendix. This will bring to light, more than 60 years after it was written, a thorough investigation that is well grounded in its documents, thus fulfilling its initial purpose, the dissemination of unknown sources that are relevant to the history of a monument that, despite continuous reconstruction, since the 16th century has stood in the same place where it was built.
