| dc.description.abstract | Network analysis is a powerful tool for studying the structure and dynamics of complex systems, such as social, biological, or technological networks. In this paper, we apply network analysis to a different domain: literature. Specifically, we focus on the characterization of characters in Portuguese literature, using their co-occurrences and interactions in novels as the basis for constructing and analysing character networks. Character networks are graphs that represent characters as nodes and their relationships as edges and can reveal interesting patterns and insights about the literary works, such as the structure, style, theme, and genre. We use natural language processing techniques to automatically extract character networks from a corpus of 50 novels written by Portuguese Speaking authors from different periods and genres. We then compute various network measures, such as degree, centrality, clustering coefficient, modularity, and community detection, to characterize the properties and features of the character networks. We also compare the character networks across different novels, authors, periods, and genres, and investigate how they reflect the literary aspects of the texts. Our results show that network analysis can provide a novel and quantitative perspective on the study of characters in Portuguese literature and can complement the traditional qualitative methods of literary criticism.
