| dc.description.abstract | This article focuses on the slave trade between the West African coast and Portugal, from the time this trade began, in the mid-15th century, to the end of the 16th century. It seeks to examine the way this slave trade took shape and aims to identify the main ports of departure on the African coast, as well as the trading entrepôts which were created in the Cape Verde and São Tomé & Príncipe archipelagos. In relation to Lisbon, which from 1512 onward was the only Portuguese port authorised to receive slaves, this article describes the institutional framework, centred around the Casa da Guiné (Guinea House) and the Casa dos Escravos (Slave House), and the way in which African slaves were traded. | en |
