Publication . Antunes, Vanessa; Serrão, Vitor; Candeias, António; Mirão, José; Valadas, Sara; Carvalho, Maria Luísa; LIBPhys-UNL; DF – Departamento de Física; Associação Profissional de Conservadores-Restauradores de Portugal (ARP)
Goa Cathedral former altarpiece, attributed to Garcia Fernandes and made around 1538, is one of the oldest western pictorial works in India. It is a work of great importance in the establishment of the conquest of Goa by the Portuguese but also for understanding the influence of Portuguese painting overseas. Goa Cathedral former altarpiece is revealed as a crucial study source of Garcia Fernandes' creative process. There is evidence in the vigorous underdrawing of these paintings, of the existence of different types of drawing, as well as abandoned iconographic themes, or formal alterations of compositions. The iconographic and stylistic study evidences north and south-European influences in the choice and representation of the themes around the Martírio de Santa Catarina. In the present study, this work is compared in the making of the underdrawing with other works attributed to Garcia Fernandes.
  • Delays in lung cancer diagnosis and treatment: real-life assessment in a tertiary care center
Publication . Teixeira, Bernardo; Sequeira, Telma; Gomes, Maria Isabel Azevedo Rodrigues; da Silva, Filipe Ferreira; Boléo-Tomé, José Pedro; DF – Departamento de Física; CeFITec – Centro de Física e Investigação Tecnológica; CMA - Centro de Matemática e Aplicações; GECP - Grupo de Estudos do Cancro do Pulmão
Introduction: Clinical guidelines recommend rapid evaluation of patients with suspected lung cancer. There are few data concerning delays in the diagnostic process of lung cancer in Portugal and adherence to recommendations. The aim of this work is to review and analyze the different phases in the process of diagnosis, staging, therapeutic decision and treatment within a pulmonology department. Methods: Retrospective, single -center cohort study, with identification and analysis of the different stages of the pathway taken by patients with suspected lung cancer. The study contemplates the flow design and characterization related to waiting times. Descriptive statistical analysis of waiting times in each step and total waiting times and comparison with available guidelines. Results: 77 patients included, predominantly male (72.7%), mean age of 66. Mean time from admission to start of treatment was 68 days (±55.2). Most patients underwent bronchoscopy (71.4%), which was conclusive in 54.6%; 39 patients (50.6%) needed a second exam and 14 (18.2%) a third one. Mean time from multidisciplinary decision to treatment was 14 days (±25.6). There were great differences between modalities: 6 days (±8) to chemotherapy, 5 days (±2) to radiation therapy and 63 days (±33) to surgery. Adherence to guidelines varied between 36.4% and 50.6% concerning total time and between 44.2% and 58.4% for time from diagnosis to treatment. Conclusion: Total time of the process exceeded main guidelines in 6 to 26 days; however, there was considerable heterogeneity and results do not differ greatly from other published data. Proposing an optimized workflow may shorten critical stages and improve global performance, allowing for improvements in doctor and patient’s expectations.
  • Métrica Vertebral: a Aplicação de uma Nova Tecnologia na Análise da Coluna Vertebral
Publication . Quaresma, Claudia; Dias, Inês; Secca, Mário Forjaz; O'Neill, João; Branco, Jorge; DF – Departamento de Física; CeFITec – Centro de Física e Investigação Tecnológica; NOVA Medical School|Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (NMS|FCM); Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, Centro de Estudos Históricos, CELOM
Objective: To present the results of the first application of the new technology - Vertebral Metrics - the analysis of the 3D position of the vertex of each spinous process in pregnant women. Material and Methods: The Vertebral Metrics was applied to women without associated pathology in four stages of pregnancy (12, 20, 32, 37 weeks gestation). We applied univariate linear models. Results: We found that the differences that occur during pregnancy are more significant at the position y (anteroposterior). It was found also that there is a positive correlation between the biomechanical position of the vertex of each of the vertebrae with the homologous position of rest. Discussion/Conclusion: Through Vertebral Metrics innovative results could be obtained in analyzing biomechanics of the spine. A device that has different applications can be easily adopted in areas such as orthopedics, neurosurgery, pediatrics and rehabilitation. It should also be noted that this instrument is not exhausted in the sample of this research because it can be further applied to the general population
