- Contribuição para o resgate da memória da exploração de carvão natural no concelho de Porto de MósPublication . Brandão, José Manuel; Sousa, Fernanda Reis; História, Territórios e Comunidades do Centro de Ecologia Funcional (pólo NOVA FCSH)The first coal mining works in the county of Porto de Mós date from the last quarter of the 19th century. The Sítio das Hortas mine, located in this county for which it was possible to foresee a large production, made part of these works but ran into constraints arising from the questionable lack of communication routes and the allegedly thin thickness of its brown coal. However, some tons of coal still came out of this mine. By the end of the century, the mine had already been abandoned. Despite having been granted a new concession, there is no record of new activity since then. The mine was declared definitively abandoned in 1987. Thus, the reports by of engineers who visited the mine in that period are essential documents to recover the county's industrial memory

- Portuguese Public Works Contractors During the Estado Novo (1933-1974)Publication . Mascarenhas-Mateus, João; Caiado, Manuel Marques; Veiga, Ivo; História, Territórios e Comunidades do Centro de Ecologia Funcional (pólo NOVA FCSH)After a long “voyage” of study through different countries in Europe, each engaged in their own changes in construction cultures during the 19th and 20th centuries, the last chapter of this book focuses on Portugal, the country that also opened this work. This chapter presents findings from the PTBUILDS19_20 research project, which aims to set up a digital knowledge platform dedicated to contemporary Portuguese construction history. A first contextual approach is given, concerning the political and socio-economic conditions of the Estado Novo political regime in relation to the public works industry sector. An analysis of 13 of the most important construction companies during that period follows. More than 350 construction works executed by those companies are discussed, with their typological distribution and location. The relationships of each company with firm founders, engineers and architects, other contractors, materials producers and vendors as well as public institutions are also analysed within the economic cycles in Portugal that marked the period 1933-1974. The structural solutions, machines, equipment and materials used in different infrastructures are described and used to identify different technological periods depending on infrastructure types. The chapter concludes that the study of construction companies in Portugal fills an important historiographical gap to be bridged in the study of the construction industry not only in Portugal but also in other European countries.
- Previdência Social as an Experience of SocietyPublication . Azevedo, Ana Carina; História, Territórios e Comunidades do Centro de Ecologia Funcional (pólo NOVA FCSH)This chapter analyzes the special system of social protection called Previdência Social in the Portuguese dictatorship (1933–1974). Azevedo offers a novel view by focusing on social support for civil servants as the only case where the state had the duties of an employer. The chapter analyzes the impact of social benefits in the daily life of the social class, and its significance in the definition of the relationship between the individual and the state. Azevedo indicates how social benefits were used both as a legitimizing tool of the New State and as a means of guaranteeing social control. The chapter concludes with a glimpse at the transformation of the idea of Previdência Social, from a product of state generosity to a personal right.
