- Design and Implementation of a New Layout in a New Production Area of a Cork Stopper Factory Following Lean Manufacturing PrinciplesPublication . Amorim, Sofia; Nunes, Leonel; Pimentel, Carina; Godina, Radu; Matias, João C. O.; UNIDEMI - Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial; DEMI - Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e IndustrialThe current market conditions and purchasing power put pressure on selling prices. To maintain corporate profits, it is important to increase manufacturing efficiency and lower costs. The industrial unit in which this project was developed aims to increase the annual production of cork stoppers and by doing so, maintain the high standards of the quality and accuracy in their processes. To respond to this growth, Lean Manufacturing was implemented, and it was decided to build a new production area. The goal is to create a new production area for cork stoppers capable of producing around half a million cork stoppers per day. The use of Total Flow Management (TFM) tools allowed for the design of the layout and to level production. With the construction of a continuous flow between processes, the storage areas were gradually reduced, and the volume of WIP stock decreased by 63%. The results have also shown a decrease in the complaint rate of 3.5%, which was reduced under the established threshold of 5%, fulfilling the objectives proposed by the company for the project.
- Diagnosis and TQM Strategies for Improving the Organizational Efficiency of a Consulting CompanyPublication . Pimenta, Eliana; Pimentel, Carina; Godina, Radu; Azevedo, Susana Garrido; Matias, João C. O.; UNIDEMI - Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial; DEMI - Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e IndustrialTotal Quality Management (TQM) is useful in both the industrial and service sectors. The purpose of this study was to increase profitability at a management consulting company by applying and improving internal operational excellence. This was accomplished using a case study. In order to overcome the problems, a prioritized plan of actions was developed by identifying the main sources of improvement. TQM strategies and the requirements of the ISO 9001: 2015 standard are followed. It was possible to observe some benefits on efficiency outcomes and small changes can provide to a company through large steps towards greater results. In a long-term perspective and considering that the performance and efficiency of the commercial has increased.
- Metaheuristic optimal design of adaptive composite beamsPublication . Costa, Diogo M. S.; Loja, M. A. R.; Vinyas, M.; DEMI - Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e IndustrialThe integration of active materials in composite structures confers them the capability of adapting its behaviour when submitted to loads, overcoming a merely passive response. This adaptive character can be further optimized if the adequate design variable parameters are identified and selected. This work presents a study on the use of a metaheuristic bio-inspired technique to optimize (non-)skewed adaptive composite beams where material properties vary along the length. The results illustrate the performance of the analysis-optimization package implemented as well as the possible range of behaviours, beyond the optimal configurations achieved for the set of case studies.
- Identification of Swift Law Parameters Using FEMU by a Synthetic Image DIC-Based ApproachPublication . Henriques, João; Conde, Mariana; Andrade-Campos, António; Xavier, José; UNIDEMI - Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial; DEMI - Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e IndustrialComputer-aided engineering systems rely on constitutive models and their parameters to describe the material behaviour. The calibration of more elaborated material models with a larger number of parameters becomes very time and cost consuming. The development of image-based technology has enhanced the interest in inverse identification methods, which, when coupled with full-field measurements, have the potential to reduce the number of experimental tests required to accurately identify material properties. This work aims to identify the Swift hardening law parameters of a dual-phase steel using a tensile test on a heterogeneous dogbone specimen under uniaxial and quasi-static loading conditions using the finite element model updating (FEMU) technique. The numerical results were used to generate synthetic images, which were then processed by digital image correlation (DIC) and used as the reference in the identification procedure. Two different approaches were tested: (i) directly comparing the numerical results to the reference; (ii) using DIC-levelled numerical data by iteratively generating synthetic images and using the DIC filter with the same settings as were used on the reference (virtual experiment). The identification results obtained from both approaches are compared and discussed.
- Organizational and Methodological Influence of Risk Management in ProjectsPublication . Gomes, Diogo; Dias, Ana; Navas, Helena V. G.; Abreu, António; UNIDEMI - Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial; DEMI - Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial; UNINOVA-Instituto de Desenvolvimento de Novas Tecnologias; CTS - Centro de Tecnologia e SistemasProject risk management is essential to managers' decision making and business success, because it allows the manager to identify, analyse and decide on the most appropriate way to respond to different adversities that may arise during the development of new products, services, processes, projects, continuous improvement, etc. This requires a mind-set that risks have a major influence on the bottom line and use analytical methods or risk management software. It is essential to integrate the entire organizational structure into risk mitigation intervention. The purpose of this paper is to address some of the important topics to consider for well implemented and successful risk management. An approach is taken at both organizational and methodological levels.
- A Bayesian approach to predict the structural responses of FGM plates with uncertain parametersPublication . Loja, Maria Amélia Ramos; Carvalho, Alda; Neto, J. P.; Silva, Tiago A. N.; Vinyas, Mahesh; UNIDEMI - Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial; DEMI - Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e IndustrialThe increasing complexity associated to both structures and materials have been posing a continuous demand for numerical tools that allow predicting their behavior and simultaneously consider the influence of the uncertainty associated to multiple parameters. This work presents a Bayesian approach to characterize the influence of each material phase's properties and the volume fraction parameters in the behavior of biphasic functionally graded plates.
- Literature review on specific types of risk faced by firmsPublication . Brito, Rui; Jacinto, Celeste; DEMI - Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial; UNIDEMI - Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Engenharia Mecânica e IndustrialThis contribution presents a literature review focused on four types of risk that firms may face during their operation, namely, operational risk, supply chain risk, strategic risk, and enterprise risk. The applied methodology consisted of an online search of databases regarding scientific documents in English, published in different journals; the search was based on several keywords/strings (themes) that had to be included just as in the article title. The number of surveyed papers by theme showed a variation from 40 to 600 and the number of citations of those papers showed a wider variation from 2 to 918. Selected articles from the four themes were analyzed and the first five with more citations were read in full to make a synopsis of each article. However, to reduce the length of the current paper, only two synopses of each theme were explicitly included here. Overall, the findings show that firm’s risks are an important subject for academic researchers, managers and stakeholders, for risky situations can occur and sometimes lead to very heavy losses. A few research gaps were identified, either the lack of quantitative models for the assessment and management of enterprises’ risks, or insufficient practical support/expertise, namely through case studies and/or well-designed surveys. The review ends with the limitations and contributions of the study.
- Design of a Continuous Improvement Model in a Portuguese Food Industry Company – A Case StudyPublication . Dias, Ana; Navas, Helena V. G.; Abreu, A.; UNIDEMI - Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial; DEMI - Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial; UNINOVA-Instituto de Desenvolvimento de Novas Tecnologias; CTS - Centro de Tecnologia e SistemasThe search for perfection forces organizations to adopt new techniques and approaches, focused on the systematic creation of innovative solutions that facilitate the processes of continuous improvement. In view of this context, there was an opportunity to study the implementation of the Lean philosophy in the production line, at a processed food organization. A continuous improvement model was designed for an organizational system, combining tools used in both TRIZ methodology and Lean philosophy. Several Lean tools are used in the model in order to support problem formulation, e.g. Brainstorming, 5 Whys, Pareto Diagram, Ishikawa Diagram, Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) Cycle. And the Kano Model integrated in the proposed model allows assessing employee satisfaction at a later stage than the implementation of previously found solutions. In case the problems identified are not very complex, were resorted to the use of both TRIZ and Lean techniques, such as cause/effect databases, the 40 problem solving TRIZ principles, visual management, 5S's or line balancing. But if the problems identified are more complex, which means with an inventive issue to be solved, Matrix of Contradictions and S-Field Analysis TRIZ tools proved to be more appropriate to find the proper solution. With the case study carried out, it was noted that the proposed model proved to be very useful as a roadmap for the implementation of Lean and TRIZ tools in the continuous improvement of industrial products, services and processes should be the ways to continually minimize them in a company.
- Triz as a support methodology for new product developmentPublication . Dias, Ana; Matos, Luís; Navas, Helena V. G.; Abreu, António; UNIDEMI - Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial; DEMI - Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e IndustrialGrowing demands and rapid changes in markets compel organizations to think more about innovation and continuous improvement. Nowadays, any growth strategy, and even its own survival in the markets, is increasingly being applied by new approaches and management methodologies. The study developed in the scope of this paper focused on the approach and interpretation of the use of the TRIZ methodology, in search of new ways of solving problems, identifying their support tools. Another concept explored and related to TRIZ is the New Product Development (NPD). The present paper aims to approach the concept of TRIZ regarding NPD and the way they are related by following innovative doctrines appealing to creativity. Within this paper and through the analysis of the different fields investigated, a diagrammatic model was proposed contemplating concepts and relations between them. In order to analyze the feasibility of the implementation of this same diagrammatic model in an industrial environment, a case study was presented in a company that uses TRIZ, and through a conclusive analysis, it is verified that the proposed model can be used as support in solving problems of an innovative and creative nature inherent to the implementation of new management processes and their improvement.
- Exploring Lean and Green Supply Chain Performance Using Balanced Scorecard PerspectivePublication . Duarte, Susana; Cabrita, Maria do Rosário de Meireles Ferreira; Machado, Virgílio António Cruz; DEMI - Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial; UNIDEMI - Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Engenharia Mecânica e IndustrialGoing lean/green is a trend more manufacturers are beginning to recognize as important in an era of economic aus-terity and environmental responsibility. Unlike lean supply chain, which focuses on ways to improve operations and cut wastes from the customer's perspective, green initiatives look at ways to eliminate waste from the environment's perspective. Looking at operations from a ‘lean/green' perspective has benefits to not only the environment, but to manufacturers and customers as well. Based on the literature review we developed a conceptual model incorporating lean and green supply chain into a performance measurement system, using the balanced scorecard approach.
