- Development of Serious Games for Science Assessment Using Educational Design ResearchPublication . Silva, Patricia Christine; Vicente, Paulo Nuno; Rodrigues, Ana Valente; Vicente, Paulo Nuno; Departamento de Ciências da Comunicação (DCC); Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA); Serious Games SocietyThis article addresses concerns inherent to the process of assessing science learning, which is incompatible with the recommendations from an Inquiry-Based Science Education perspective. The challenges in achieving effective assessment intensify with evaluative practices primarily aimed at classification, focused on knowledge, and characterized by the inadequacy of instruments and assessment activities used in educational contexts. This article aims to present and describe the development cycle of four serious games designed for formative and summative assessment of science learning in primary education. The serious games were created through iterative cycles supported by the Educational Design Research (EDR) method, structured into two main stages: design and implementation. This process took place over two academic years in a primary school, with the participation of 12 classes. A total of 245 children participated in the first implementation cycle, and data from 158 children were collected in the second cycle through post-implementation survey responses about the serious games. The products presented here are four serious games that serve as legitimate, validated, and innovative assessment activities, fulfilling their purpose of evaluating science knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values while engaging the target audience. This study strengthens the theoretical field in this area of research, demonstrating the suitability of this methodological approach in designing such digital educational games.
- João de Deus’s musical perversionsPublication . Pinto, José; Medeiros, Margarida; Instituto de Etnomusicologia - Centro de Estudos em Música e Dança (INET-MD - NOVA FCSH); Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA); Departamento de Ciências da Comunicação (DCC); Routledge | Taylor & Francis GroupThis article addresses the music and its interactions in two films directed by João César Monteiro–Recordações da Casa Amarela [Recollections of the Yellow House] and A Comédia de Deus [God’s Comedy]. These are the first two films in God’s Trilogy, a trilogy released between 1989 and 1999. Together, they tell the story of a character called João de Deus, who lives and behaves in ways that deviate from social and moral norms, establishing obsessive and perverse relationships with several women. In this article, we approach the music and sounds we hear in certain scenes and the way these work in representing the character’s ‘self’. Thus, by analysing the music that accompanies the voyeuristic behaviour of the character João de Deus towards Julieta, his sexual overvaluation of Rosarinho, and the fetishism evidenced in his relationship with Joaninha’s underwear, we can both better define the main character’s personality and understand the role music plays in developing the plots of Monteiro’s cinema.
- De la planta a la pantallaPublication . Coelho, Salomé Lopes; Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA)Interview with filmmaker Azucena Losana about her project Metarretratos.
- Nature/Ch'ixi/Culture and the Cinemas of Latin AmericaPublication . Coelho, Salomé Lopes; Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA)This collection of essays explores cinema’s ability to reanimate what has been imposed as an inert, available Nature—not by indiscriminately attributing life as a supposedly superior condition, but by insisting on relationality, becomings-with, and the performative negotiation of dualities and their beyond. In addressing these concerns, this dossier invites diverse perspectives on Latin American cinema and its entanglements with nature/ch’ixi/culture. From indigenous filmmaking to experimental cinema, from the politics of extraction to the aesthetics of vegetal and mineral rhythms, these contributions seek to rethink the possibilities of cinematic intervention in times of ecological crisis and epistemic transformation. By situating cinema within a cosmopolitical framework, this collection of essays and conversations traces how moving images become sites of resistance, negotiation, and reinvention in the pluriverse of Latin American worlds.
- On Techno-Aesthetics and PerformancePublication . Coelho, Sílvia Pinto; Coutinho, Liliana; Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA); Universidade Catolica PortuguesaOn Techno-Aesthetics and Performance: Movement, Dance, Cinema and Everyday Life introduces the pretext for this issue of JSTA and how it relates to the research of the invited editors, Sílvia Pinto Coelho and Liliana Coutinho, the invited author, Ludovic Duhem, and each of the researchers that responded to our initial call for papers. It also presents an understanding of techno-aesthetics related to J. J. Gibson's theory of affordances, and to a particular proposal of choreographic thinking. Finally, it establishes a relationship with all the articles in the special issue of JSTA.
- Classifying disinformation on dating platformsPublication . Sepúlveda, Rita; Crespo, Miguel; Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA); Universidad Pompeu FabraLittle attention has been given to disinformation in the context of dating platforms. Dating apps become an attractive means for disinformative agents to target users, since their design and affordances shape users’ behaviours and can contribute to the creation and dissemination of disinformation. This study explores how online daters define, perceive and experience disinformation on dating platforms, and the impact it can have on usage and behaviours. A mixed method approach was employed combining a survey (n=309) with interviews (n=11). Findings show that although disinformation has its own theoretical framework online daters perceive it beyond, pointing to differences in how it is theoretically conceptualized and how it is experienced. Users hold dating platforms responsible for not detecting disinfor-mation efficiently, pointing to the need for mandatory verification of users’ information. While dating platforms employ several technologies and strategies to deal with disinformation, users rate them as insufficient.
The Kings of Portugal, Manuel II, and Spain, Alfonso XIII, met in Vila Viçosa between February 12 and 15, 1909, at a time when the Portuguese Mo-narchy was in crisis, threatened by the Republicans, and when Spain, on the other hand, was emerging from its crisis of the end of the 19th century. This research analyzes the iconographic narrative-including the correlative verbal text-that the illustrated weekly magazine Ilustração Portuguesa constructed of the meeting, through a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the discourse, with the aims of determining its thematic structure, explaining the proposals for generating meaning suggested for the event and understanding the con-cept of photographic coverage that existed at the time. It was concluded that the photographic report presents current features, such as the exploration of visual peculiarities of human interest, and dated ones, such as the dominance of general and group shots. It was also concluded that there is tension between the verbal text, which occasionally refers to the immaturity of Manuel II, and the iconographic narrative, which produces a positive impression of the meeting of the sovereigns and highlighted the association of Alfonso XIII with symbols and acts typical of a modern king, who could be a model for Manuel II.
- Nutrition and Physical Activity Education in Medical SchoolPublication . Sousa, Joana Rodrigues; Afreixo, Vera; Carvalho, Joana; Silva, Paula; Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA); MDPI AGThis review explores the diverse landscape of integrating nutrition and physical activity education into medical school curricula, focusing on the imperative role of physicians in promoting health through lifestyle changes. By examining global medical education structures, we uncovered disparities in nutrition and physical activity training, and highlighted the need for a shared framework to address international and regional challenges. Despite acknowledging the importance of both nutrition and physical activity, studies have consistently uncovered deficiencies in medical school curricula, especially in skills related to providing lifestyle advice and behavioral counseling. Survey studies among medical students have illuminated various perceptions and knowledge gaps, emphasizing the need for more comprehensive and mandatory nutrition and physical activity training. While acknowledging progress, challenges, such as time constraints, resource availability, and faculty expertise, persist. Integrating lifestyle education results in resistance, a demand for strategic communication, and faculty buy-ins. These findings underscore the importance of a holistic approach that balances theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and confidence that medical students need to promote effective nutrition and physical activity in healthcare.
- Low-Alcohol and Nonalcoholic WinesPublication . Silva, Paula; Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA); MDPI - Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing InstituteThis review aims to create a communication tool for low-alcohol and nonalcoholic wine production, catering to scientists, educators, students, and wine producers in the field. With health concerns regarding alcohol consumption, the need for information on low-alcohol wines is essential. This paper outlines the methods for the pre-fermentation (leaf area reduction, early grape harvest, grape must dilution, filtration of grape juice and addition of glucose oxidase), mid-fermentation (employing non-saccharomyces yeasts, using genetically modified yeasts through metabolic engineering, and controlling yeast nutrition), and post-fermentation (nanofiltration and reverse osmosis, osmotic distillation, pervaporation, spinning cone column, vacuum distillation, and multi-stage membrane-based systems) stages and their effects on wine quality. It also presents evidence of the impact of alcoholic, low-alcohol, and nonalcoholic wines on cardiovascular health. Finally, the potential market for low-alcohol and nonalcoholic wines is discussed. Key findings indicate a shift toward low-alcohol alternatives due to health, economic, and social factors and consumer interest in healthier lifestyles. Low-alcohol and nonalcoholic wines offer health benefits, particularly cardiovascular health, presenting an opportunity for winemakers to cater to a health-conscious market. From an economic perspective, the low-alcohol and nonalcoholic wine market is poised to grow and diversify its revenue streams. The development of high-quality low-alcohol and nonalcoholic wines, which can command premium prices, enhances profitability. The changing regulatory landscape in Europe, with a focus on transparency in alcohol labeling and nutritional information, aligns with the new consumer preferences and regulatory standards.
- Neuroprotective Effects of Olive OilPublication . Gonçalves, Marta; Vale, Nuno; Silva, Paula; Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA); MDPI - Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing InstituteNeurodegenerative diseases are a significant challenge to global healthcare, and oxidative stress plays a crucial role in their development. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the neuroprotective potential of olive oil, with a primary focus on its antioxidant properties. The chemical composition of olive oil, including key antioxidants, such as oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, and oleocanthal, is systematically examined. The mechanisms by which these compounds provide neuroprotection, including counteracting oxidative damage and modulating neuroprotective pathways, are explored. The neuroprotective efficacy of olive oil is evaluated by synthesizing findings from various sources, including in vitro studies, animal models, and clinical trials. The integration of olive oil into dietary patterns, particularly its role in the Mediterranean diet, and its broader implications in neurodegenerative disease prevention are also discussed. The challenges in translating preclinical findings to clinical applications are acknowledged and future research directions are proposed to better understand the potential of olive oil in mitigating the risk of neurodegenerative conditions. This review highlights olive oil not only as a dietary component, but also as a promising candidate in preventive neurology, advocating for further investigation in the context of neurodegenerative diseases.
