Brandão, José Manuel; História, Territórios e Comunidades do Centro de Ecologia Funcional (pólo NOVA FCSH); Câmara Municipal de LisboaThis article highlights, particularly, the crucial issue of water availability at the sites selected by the Lisbon City Council, in 1854, for the construction of a slaughterhouse. Among the techical and scientific consultations requested by the civil authorities, pillars of this study, brought the information gathered in his pioneering hydrogeological work into the political decision-making, in an unprecedented way. The consistency of his observations allowed him to recommend the use of the water from the farms on the eastern outskirts of the city, which was abundant and of good quality, and to advise against the opening of absorption wells on the alternative site inside the town, due to the risk of contamination of the underground aquifers. Finally, between scientific and prctical reasosn, the choice was made for the most central location, supplied by the Águas Livres Aqueduct, in the controversial belief that this would guarantee a more regular supply to the future slaughterhouse.
- Arquivo SameiroPublication . Sameiro, João Caetano; História, Territórios e Comunidades do Centro de Ecologia Funcional (pólo NOVA FCSH); Imprensa da Universidade de CoimbraSameiro Archive is a private family archive owned by the Sameiro family, and its documents date from the 16th century to the present days. Its current owner sought to not only to gather family manuscripts dispersed by several family branches, but he also proceeded to reconstruct lost family records. This information retrieval exercise is characterized by reproduction of documentation related to family members, using as sources public archives as well as documentation belonging to private owners. Furthermore, the owner’s personal interests regarding genealogy and family history have been and remain reflected the whole process. Therefore, this article explores how the owner’s organization differs from the systemic archival classification. The first, characterized by the combination of original manuscripts and recent copies, physically organized in folders according to family members and reflecting historical biographies, contributes to recreate a family memoir. On the other hand, the systemic classification is far more interesting for archival history per si, and still emphasizes the owner’s protagonism in the making and recovering a family archive.
- Domingos Vandelli (1735-1816) e a mina carvão do Cabo MondegoPublication . Brandão, José Manuel; História, Territórios e Comunidades do Centro de Ecologia Funcional (pólo NOVA FCSH); LNEG - Laboratório Nacional de Energia e GeologiaThis study contextualises and discusses some aspects of Domingos Vandelli's contribution to the knowledge and exploitation of the Cabo Mondego coal deposit in the last quarter of the 18th century. Its main sources are two manuscripts written by him, one of them unpublished, which explain the contours of his approach to and departure from mining works, and the technical guidelines given to the Portuguese Army officer appointed in 1773 by the minister Martinho de Melo e Castro to conduct the mine's research and exploration. It should be emphasised that the choice of a man of science to accompany the mine denotes recognition of the strategic importance of coal in the country's desired industrial development.
Brandão, José Manuel; Vernon, Robert W.; Callapez , Pedro Miguel; História, Territórios e Comunidades do Centro de Ecologia Funcional (pólo NOVA FCSH); GeoBioTec - Geobiociências, Geoengenharias e Geotecnologias; DCT - Departamento de Ciências da TerraThe first steam engine for industrial purposes was introduced into Portugal for pumping water from the interior of the Buarcos coal mine. Its acquisition from Boulton & Watt, Birmingham, England in 1804 was initiated by the Intendant of Mines José Bonifácio and Minister D. Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho. However, Domingos Vandelli in the 1770s was the first person to suggest an engine should be purchased for the mine. Large and heavy, this “fire pump”, with a power of 50 hp, incorporated all them improvements patented by Watt. After being transported to Lisbon on the ship “Príncipe do Brasil”, the 144 engine parts packed into 26 crates arrived at the mine site, only to remain there, paradoxically, without the machine ever being set up. There were various reasons for this: the early collapse of the galleries located under the sea, which needed pumping; the absence of a specialized English engineer; political instability and the French invasions; and the deterioration of Bonifácio’s relations with the authorities. In 1814, what was left of the machine’s parts were transferred to the Naval Arsenal, where the engine became ‘lost to history.
- Arquivos de sondagens: responsabilidade científica e cultural.Publication . Soares, Sofia Mesquita; Brandão, José Manuel; História, Territórios e Comunidades do Centro de Ecologia Funcional (pólo NOVA FCSH); LNEG - Laboratório Nacional de Energia e GeologiaLNEG’s core library (Litoteca) is an important infrastructure to support research and development, where ca. 600 km of drill cores from various regions of the country are archived. In this work, the framework for the prospecting drillings conducted in the Rio Maior region during the heyday of coal exploration will be carried out, highlighting the records still existing in the LNEG’ facilities and the importance of their maintenance.
- Proteger e acolherPublication . Pacheco, Fátima; Baltazar, Isabel; História, Territórios e Comunidades do Centro de Ecologia Funcional (pólo NOVA FCSH); Instituto de História Contemporânea (IHC); Universidade PortucalenseSituations of generalized violation of human rights and individual and severe persecution made us aware of the need to guarantee victims of such situations the international protection they need. The essence of such protection consists in granting a right of reception; the right not to be returned to the State of origin; and, furthermore, the need to provide procedural and judicial guarantees for its implementation. Such an aspiration can be realized by granting such individuals the International Status of Refugees. The present work reflects on the content of this right, highlighting its shortcomings and presenting the answers that the Union has created to fulfill this desideratum.
- A inovação aberta e o “inovacionismo” contemporâneoPublication . Open innovation and the contemporary “innovationism”: a political economy perspective. Open innovation is one of those catchwords that has been capturing the imaginaries of our societies, pointing out transformative designs. “Open innovation” is being viewed as “the next word” in innovation studies and management practices. Bibliometric reviews have been revealing that open innovation has spawned special issues, numerous books, and hundreds of papers devoted to proposing this (allegedly) new policy framework. With this bibliographical essay, we give a qualitative review that understands open innovation and the reach of its literature: i.e., the presumptions in place and how an entrepreneurial and management bias marks it, benefiting from announced technological trajectories currently amplified by the digital age and the alleged opportunities of the 4.0 industry.
The Portuguese Association for the Progress of Sciences (APPC), created in 1917 on the initiative of Francisco da Costa Lobo, professor at the University of Coimbra, and with the support of the Catalan astronomer Ricardo Cirera, was directly inspired by the Spanish Association for the Progress of Sciences. The Spanish association had been set up in 1908, organising biennial congresses that brought together various scientific fields, which in turn were divided into sections, in an attempt to bring together the various areas and promote the dissemination and development of scientific knowledge. Through the new Portuguese association, the Portuguese participation in the congresses of the Spanish association was then formalised, leading to the organisation of joint meetings from 1921 onwards – the “Portuguese-Spanish Congresses for the Progress of Sciences – whose activity would continue until the 1970s. It is the recovery of the trajectory of this institution, delve in integrated and global manner and interpreted in the context of the general history of Luso-Spanish relations, that we intend to address in this historical and historiographical study.
- Landscape architectural documents in personal archives, an added challengePublication . Fonseca, Maria João; História, Territórios e Comunidades do Centro de Ecologia Funcional (pólo NOVA FCSH); Imprensa da Universidade de CoimbraIncorporating architectural records into thematic archival institutions has been a common practice since the 1970s, a trend that has recently accelerated in the Portuguese context. The uniqueness of certain architectural records and collections has been an archival challenge, reflected by the several attempts to standardize their description in an ongoing process since the 1980s. While acknowledging the crucial work done by these institutions in preserving documents, there is also a tendency to focus on preserving fragments of an information system, which can have pernicious effects on understanding archives. In an attempt to understand the composition and organization of archives in the field of landscape architecture and how they can restrict or distort archival classification and knowledge, a brief comparative analysis is conducted on the corpus of documentation of three archives under the custody of thematic institutions. For enhanced understanding, a concise overview of the discipline of landscape architecture and the roles played by its practitioners is provided. This comparative analysis attempts to demonstrate how a thematic approach, breaking organic ties, even if indelible, or underestimating lesser-known contexts or producer activities, can restrict or distort archival classification and knowledge. The focus on Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles's archive and its ongoing organization, along with the analysis of a drawing from this archive, aims to demonstrate the need for a transition, especially in specialized or thematic institutions, from the construction of professional collections or archives to a focus on personal archives, which are organic aggregations of individuals who, during their lifetimes, also bequeathed records related to landscape architecture.
