Esta breve análise, resultante de uma comunicação no Workshop “Religião e Trabalho no Mundo Antigo”, pretende entender de que forma era encarado o trabalho no reino siro-mesopotâmico de Mari, no decurso dos sécs. XIX e XVIII a.C. Para os antigos mesopotâmios, o mundo humano e o mundo divino partilhavam um destino comum, que obrigava a uma “aliança” tácita entre ambos e que pautava todos os aspetos da vida terrena, incluindo aquele que respeitava às atividades laborais. Neste sentido, e tendo em conta que o monarca desempenhava uma função sagrada/divina, devemos perceber de que forma este mediava a relação entre os seres humanos e as entidades celestes e quais os traços gerais da sua missão. Presented in the context of a Workshop entitled “Religion and Work in the Ancient World”, this brief analysis intends to understand how work was perceived in the Syro-Mesopotamian kingdom of Mari, during the 19th and 18th centuries BC. For the ancient Mesopotamians, the human world and the divine world shared a common destiny, which required a tacit “alliance” between them and which governed all aspects of earthly life, including those that concern the work activities. In this sense, and bearing in mind that the monarch played a divine function, we should understand how the king mediated the relationship between the human and the celestial spheres and what were the general features of his sacred mission.
