ABSTRACT - Over the last few years, the choice of the private sector for childbirth has been increased. International studies have identified the contribution of different factors to this type of choice, but these aspects have not been explored in Portugal. Thus, the objective of this study was to study and compare the factors, that most influence the choice of place of delivery, for women who preferred the public or private sector. For this purpose, a questionnaire was developed and requested to be completed by mothers between 2000 and 2018. A total of 1,129 women participated in this study. With the analysis of the results it was possible to define two distinct groups, one of mothers who opted for the public service and the other one, for those who chose private hospital. The group of mothers who chose for the private sector was distinguished by the importance given to health insurance, quality and control. In its turn, the location was considered more relevant for mothers who opted for the public service.
