This work is a contribution to the diagnosis of damage that occurs in roller bearings in situations of practical interest. The work focuses on the bearings that support the shafts of belt-driven transmissions. In this type of application, the geometric deviations of the shafts are the most frequent cause of bearing damage. Expressions have been deduced in order to calculate the acting loads on the bearings, and the relation that exists between these loads and the positions of wear-out marks produced by balls on the rolling tracks. On the basis of these expressions an experimental method was developed to quantify the conditions for tuning of the shafts of the belt-driven transmissions by measuring the position of the marks cited above, facilitating explanation of certain premature rolling bearing damage.
