This article set out the circumstances around the imprisonment of some Jesuits in Portugal following the 1759 law of expulsion as well as analysing some of the mechanisms of antiJesuit repression in Portuguese society, more specifically in the city of Lisbon, by the Secretary of State, Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo, the future Marquis of Pombal.
