Resumo(s)
This thesis examines the communication of Archaeology, historically and
comparatively, via analogical and digital media. The research question is how digital
technology, as the main way of accessing information today, is impacting the tradition
of storytelling and pictorial representation of the past. The principles of interactivity,
multimediality and connectivity, applied to the communication of Archaeology, both
remediate and innovate older media formats, bringing innovative approaches that
engage the public through edutainment.
Drawing from literature in Heritage Studies, Museology, Museography, Visual
Culture and Digital Media, we analyze the communication of the archaeological site
Zambujal (Torres Vedras, Portugal) between 1946 and 2018. In order to understand
the role of the digital medium in communicating cultural heritage we will review the
state of the art in digital museography and develop a prototype for a virtual exhibit to
tell the story of Zambujal, using the web documentary genre of digital storytelling as
a framework.
The growing demand for digital content in museography is giving rise to new research
needs, allowing theorization and experimentation of new forms of communication in
Archaeology. Visitor’s studies have shown that the use of digital media in museums
enhances learning and provides rich and engaging experiences. But our study
proposes to understand the role of storytelling in Archaeology historically, situating
the digital medium as the most recent approach in a long tradition. In this way we
reinforce the thesis that the perception of the past reflects the cultural condition of the
society that produces it.
