- Evaluating modern mathematics curriculaPublication . Matos, José Manuel Leonardo de; Almeida, Mária; Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais (CICS.NOVA - NOVA FCSH); DM - Departamento de MatemáticaThis article intends to understand the degree in which expectations about the modern mathematics reform werefulfilled. Focusing on the Portuguese case, we probed four quantitative studies developed by governmental institutions at the time of the reform, usually intended to evaluate its implementation at several grade levels. Re-appreciated in modern times, these studies provided us with insights about the reform. More specifically, following Gimeno’s distinction among several curricular levels, the contemporary inspection of those studies allowed us to have an insight of the curriculum presented to teachers, the curriculum modelled by them, and the attained curriculum at the time of the reform.
This article seeks to understand the ways in which the communica-tion of mathematical ideas was carried out in the implementation of Telescola in Portugal during the years 1965/66 and 1966/67 which, in addition to the educational use of television, also incorporates the curricular innovation of Modern Mathemat-ics. This article investigates the mathematical knowledge expressed in documenta-tion associated with the initial two academic years of Telescola in Portugal (1965/66and 1966/67). We will try to identify not only the common knowledge of the math-ematical content, but especially its specialized knowledge. We will also seek to de-termine how this knowledge evolved as a result of the introduction of modern mathematics. The study is based on a content analysis of the scripts published in the IMAVE Bulletin, complemented with interviews with the teacher responsible for the televised classes.
The purpose of this text is to discuss theoretical and practical aspects, which involve governance, strategy and territorial configurations desired by companies for the implementation of service centers, presenting some examples. To this end, a literature review was carried out, seeking to support the referred areas of study; access to current corporate documents, which deal with the subject investigated; and content analysis of semi-structured interviews with specialists in service sharing, with experience in Brazilian and Portuguese operations, which provided a better understanding of the phenomenon. It was identified that, despite the scenario of the health crisis of COVID-19, considering a different economy in the post-pandemic, the Shared Services Centers remain on the agenda of business decisions. The result contributed to enhance the role of governance in promoting service sharing, in the search for the best possible organizational model, considering complex operations and aiming at compliance, control and risks. Likewise, it was possible to observe the strategicaspects, establishing a connection between regulatory, corporate and market demands and the implantation of the centers. In this regard, it was important to know components of the territories' configurations.
- User-generated content (UGC) in tourist attractions and destinationsPublication . Chemin, Marcelo; da Silva, Carlos Pereira; de Paul Vikou, Sidney Vincent; Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais (CICS.NOVA - NOVA FCSH); Departamento de Geografia e Planeamento Regional (DGPR); PASOSUser-generated content (UGC) is one of the tourism industry’s most strategic Big Data sources. This systematic review aims to understand what has been proposed in the scientific literature regarding utilising UGC in managing tourist attractions and destinations. Following a PRISMA protocol, 158 scientific articles (Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO Host) were reviewed, providing practical implications for the field’s management through the analysis of UGC data. We discovered a growing body of scientific production spread across various fields of knowledge and geographical coverage, conducted in different scenarios and contexts of attractions and destinations. This shows the versatility of the application where we have identified eight central themes, including experience, image, space, perception, satisfaction, narrative, brand, and demand. UGC holds significant potential as a supplementary source in problem identification. Application perspectives encompass five areas of attraction and destination management: visitors, resources, product/ marketing, site, and crises.
- Perceptions of vulnerability and precariousness of Airbnb workers in PortugalPublication . Roque, Isabel; Boavida, Nuno; Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais (CICS.NOVA - NOVA FCSH); Pluto JournalsPlatform work in the tourism sector has grown exponentially since 2014. Airbnb was a driving force for the Portuguese economy after the 2008 crisis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism was cancelled, and most workers did not have access to social benefits, causing a potential disruption in their careers. There is a gap in research regarding the analysis of the occupational trajectories of Airbnb workers and the effects of the 2008 crisis and the pandemic on their lives. Between 2020 and 2021, in-depth interviews were conducted with Airbnb workers and activists in order to analyse their occupational trajectories, collective voice and business models. The article concludes that, while Airbnb changed the tourism landscape, those who work for it remain precarious.
- New approaches to support the homeless populationPublication . Lúcio, José; Marques, Filomena; Santos, Paulo; Dina, Manso; Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais (CICS.NOVA - NOVA FCSH); Departamento de Geografia e Planeamento Regional (DGPR)The paper aims to provide better knowledge of the reality experienced by the homeless population in the City of Lisbon and, simultaneously, to offer a first reflection on the effectiveness and scope of the strategies that have been conducted by the Lisbon City Council and associations/organizations that support people living on the streets. The methodology used in this work is based on the collection of bibliography and statistical data on the subject; consultation of Municipal City Plans and the launch, treatment and analysis of a questionnaire (with statistical relevance) with the street and homeless population of the capital.
- Gender Dynamics in STEM EducationPublication . Ferreira, Eduarda; Silva, Maria João; Gomes, Cristina Azevedo; Departamento de Sociologia (DS); Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais (CICS.NOVA - NOVA FCSH); MDPI - Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing InstituteBuilding on previous research on ICT and gender, this paper explores the interrelations between gender and STEM in educational contexts in Portugal. The research aims to improve the understanding of the co-production of gender and STEM careers and to develop strategies to promote gender equity in STEM. The methodology was based on a structured workshop divided into five phases (representations, facts analysis, causes and impacts, attitudes, and strategies), each designed to address a critical aspect of the intersection of gender and STEM. Aligned with an advocacy/participatory framework, this methodology empowers participants to actively engage in the dialogue on gender equity in STEM and take meaningful actions toward fostering more inclusive environments. The study involved two distinct populations: pre-service elementary school teachers from a higher education institution and ninth-grade students. This selection was based on prior research emphasizing the influence of elementary teachers’ attitudes toward gender and STEM careers on students’ educational choices, which are made at the end of ninth grade in the Portuguese education system. The results indicated differences in the representations and attitudes of ninth-grade students and pre-service teachers regarding the gender gap in STEM, as well as variations in how girls and boys perceive and approach this issue.
- Beyond EqualityPublication . Cardoso, Daniel; Klesse, Christian; Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais (CICS.NOVA - NOVA FCSH); Departamento de Ciências da Comunicação (DCC); MDPI - Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute‘Marriage equality’ has been a widely used slogan and mobilizing concept for LGBTQ+ rights’ movements across the globe striving for formal recognition for ‘same-sex’ or ‘same-gender’ marriages. In this article, we critically interrogate the terminology and political rationality that have given shape to ‘marriage equality’ campaigns. We demonstrate the structural erasure of non-monogamous relations and populations from the changes hoped for and envisioned in these mobilizations. The lack of any genuine and substantial concern with consensual non-monogamies (CNMs) from most of the literature in the field highlights the close entanglement of marriage with monogamy. As a result, ideas are scarce about how meaningful and adequate legal recognition and social policy provisions for a wide range of intimate, sexual, familial, and/or caring bonds or constellations on the CNM continuum could look like. We argue that the critique of the mononormativity inherent to marriage is fundamental to understanding the role of this in the 21st century. We identify the roots of the mononormativity of marriage in its governmental role as a necropolitical and biopolitical technology, evidenced by its ‘civilizing’ function in white settler colonial projects. Because of this, an expansion of the call for equality to include non-monogamous populations does not resolve but rather aggravates the problem. We conclude that any truly queer politics of CNM consequently needs to be anti-marriage.
- Participants in popular mountain biking events in peri-urban protected areasPublication . Nogueira Mendes, Ricardo Manuel; da Silva, Carlos Pereira; Farías-Torbidoni, Estela Inés; Santos, Teresa; Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais (CICS.NOVA - NOVA FCSH); Departamento de Geografia e Planeamento Regional (DGPR); Institut Nacional d'Educacio Fisica de CatalunyaIn peri-urban settings, popular outdoor sporting events such as mountain biking and trail running frequently occur in natural and protected areas. While managers and researchers may perceive the number of participants as increasing pressure on these territories, visitors, users and other stakeholders often view these activities favourably and as environmentally friendly. Leveraging data from a popular mountain biking event held in Arrábida Natural Park, encompassing 4,464 participants across six editions, this research investigated the spatial dynamics between the participants and the event region to evaluate what additional pressure these events might exert on these territories. Findings showed that up to 70 % of participants originated from the park’s vicinity, with only 15% travelling beyond 50 km to attend the event. Moreover, the majority self-identified as regular park users, having ridden within the area nearly weekly, contrasting with non-regular users who resided farther away and rode in the area approximately once every nine months on average. Comparative analysis with 148 other popular mountain biking events nationwide, totalling 35,147 participants, revelaed consistent distance patterns, albeit greater for events with larger participant numbers or held in less populated locales. When deciding whether or not to authorise these events, managers should always prioritise conservation and consider other factors such as seasonality and race routes. Nonetheless, these events could be harnessed to directly benefit the park’s mission and activities, facilitating enhanced communication between managers and participants, most of whom are regular park users.
