- A Qualitative Study on University Students' Perceptions Regarding Sexual Violence Perpetrated by Women Against MenPublication . Oliveira, Leonor de; Carmo, Eunice; Cardoso, Daniel; Brazão, Nélio; Viegas, Mária; Vespasiano, Rita; Carvalho, Joana; Departamento de Ciências da Comunicação (DCC); Springer New YorkIntroduction Sexual violence (SV) perpetrated by women against men is socially dismissed and underrepresented in research. The aim of the current study was to explore the perspectives of university students (women and men) on women-perpetrated SV against men. Methods A total of 19 undergraduate students were presented with a vignette describing a hypothetical situation of SV and interviewed. Results A thematic analysis was performed, identifying four main themes: characters’ Features, sexual initiation Strategies, Consequences, and Motivations and Contexts. Participants endorsed gender stereotypes and victim-blaming narratives, but also challenged gender stereotypes and rape myths. Participants could identify violent sexual initiation strategies, could anticipate potential consequences of the abuse, and were able to imagine potential motivational and contextual factors that facilitated the abuse. Conclusions These results highlight the importance of providing adequate information regarding women-perpetrated SV and can inform preventative approaches targeting social norms that perpetuate the invisibility of this phenomenon. Recommendations for future research are discussed. Policy Implications Public policies that facilitate the training of professionals who contact with victims may help overcome the influence of rape myths that hinder appropriate intervention. Similarly, policies that support the prevention of SV in university contexts may contribute to translate the results from research into practice.
- Tools to communicate sciencePublication . Ferreira, Miguel; Granado, António; Silva-Lopes, Betina; Loureiro, João; Departamento de Ciências da Comunicação (DCC); Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA); International School for Advance StudiesVideo abstracts, filmed versions of scientific written abstracts, are an exciting trend in the world of online science videos, but, to date, the classification, conception and reception of these videos still need to be explored. This study aims to identify the most and least valued features, exploring future guidelines for producing an effective video abstract. For this purpose, 30 science video experts watched 21 video abstracts and filled out a questionnaire. Content analysis showed that video abstracts in Ecology and Environmental Sciences should be short, clear, objective, creative, dynamic and informative, mixing impactful live images with animation.

- Empatía digital en la educación en líneaPublication . Duarte, Alexandre; Moraru, Madalina; Surugiu, Romina; Marinescu, Valentina; Departamento de Ciências da Comunicação (DCC); Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA); Grupo ComunicarThis study aims to present the extent to which online education influenced the level of empathy displayed by university students. The research relies on a self-evaluated applied survey in two European countries: Portugal and Romania. The participants in this research are 1,085 students enrolled in Communication Studies programs. The purpose of this study is to unfold the connection between gender, exposure to digital technology, empathy level according to the Basic Empathy Scale applied to young adults, and online education self-perception that involves the use of webcams. Empathy can have positive effects on students’ satisfaction and increase students’ outcomes. The shift from a physical environment to a digital one brought significant challenges that most students and teachers were not ready for. The digital environment influences how empathy is expressed. The present research found evidence of a relationship between exposure to technology usage, emotional contagion, and gender. This suggests that understanding the emotions of others might be inhibited during digital education. Also, the most relevant factor of empathy variation in online education is gender. The findings of the present research may contribute to the design of activities or programs that could foster empathy expression during online education for young adults.
- Video abstract production guidePublication . Ferreira, Miguel; Silva-Lopes, Betina; Granado, António; Siopa, Catarina; Gaspar, Hugo; Castro, Helena; Castro, Sílvia; Loureiro, João; Departamento de Ciências da Comunicação (DCC); Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA); FrontiersVideo abstracts are audio-visual representations of a scientific abstract that a researcher can use to complement an article. As a science communication tool, they stand as a novel and exciting way to present scientific discoveries, explore new formats, and reach new audiences. In this practice insight, we share the experience of creating a video abstract in Ecology, explaining and exemplifying the different stages of the process: selecting the paper, writing the script, producing the video, editing the video and promoting the film. Sharing the setbacks and wins of a video collaboration between researchers and science communicators, we hope to be a valuable contribution to all the people starting and already working in the field.
This article studies the role of women in television advertisements during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain and Portugal. Through a mixed methodological design and semiotically inspired, we elaborated an analysis sheet that incorporates variables related to gender issues, female stereotypes and representativeness of women in advertising. We analyze a sample of television advertisements broadcast on television and during prime time in both countries. It was found that although women have emerged with a certain prominence, they are frequently portrayed as caregivers, mothers and housewives. In this sense, we reflect on the role of advertising as a determining vehicle to mitigate differences and, consequently, for a possible deconstruction of gender stereotypes.
This article investigates how the populist parties Vox (Spain) and Chega (Portugal), and their leaders, Santiago Abascal and André Ventura, construct the hate narrative against the media and journalists on Twitter. The study of the tweets published in their profiles reveals that journalists have become a target of the Iberian extreme right, especially evident in the case of Vox.
- Storytelling as Media Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue in Post‐Colonial SocietiesPublication . Cruz, Maria Teresa; Miranda, Madalena; Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA); Departamento de Ciências da Comunicação (DCC); Cogitatio PressThis article reflects upon digital storytelling and collaborative media practices as valuable tools for reassessing memory, questioning identity discourses, and unveiling the cultural diversity of contemporary societies. The digital age allows for a constant re‐reading and re‐mediation of cultural archives by ordinary citizens, namely by younger generations, and for the production and dissemination of alternative narratives about the present. These are crucial opportunities for post‐colonial societies to overcome silences around difficult memories that hinder a collective reappropriation of the past, confront some of the current issues on ethnical diversity, and discrimination and reimagine a more inclusive identity. However, taking advantage of this opportunity implies fully recognizing the role of media technology in shaping memory, social individuation and establishing networks, making media literacy and media education crucial aspects of cultural dialogue. Based on the experience of a citizenship project about the post‐colonial condition and Afro‐European interculturality, this essay reflects on digital storytelling, and co‐creative practices as relevant literacy and education strategies for furthering interculturality in contemporary societies.

- Online forums, audience participation and modes of political discussion:Publication . Torres da Silva, Marisa; Departamento de Ciências da Comunicação (DCC); Universidad de NavarraThe Internet has created new "dialogical spaces"1 where issues of common concern can be discussed, serving to democratize the public sphere. However, some scholars express doubts about the quality of the debates that occur in the online environment, pointing out the fragmentation, the incivility or even the anonymity as major problems that may undermine the expansion of the online public sphere. As a potential deliberative section and a civic forum, readers' comments in newspapers' websites constitute a locus for public debate and ideas exchange provided by the mainstream media. As a case study, this article intends to assess the quality of audience participation in online news sites, by analysing the readers' comments in the news about the Brazilian presidential campaign (September- November 2010) in the online versions of two Portuguese newspapers.
